Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for parents, students, and law enforcement officers.
Is this an official government certification?+
No. EbikeCertification.com is a free, not-for-profit public safety initiative. This platform is not affiliated with or endorsed by the State of California, the DMV, or any government agency. Our certification demonstrates that a rider has completed a comprehensive safety course covering California ebike laws, road rules, and hazard awareness.
Is EbikeCertification.com free?+
Yes, 100% free. There are no ads, no upsells, and no hidden fees. Our mission is to make ebike safety education accessible to every young rider.
Who needs this certification?+
California law requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet when operating a Class 1, 2, or 3 ebike. While the state does not mandate a certification, our program provides structured safety training so young riders understand the rules of the road, their legal responsibilities, and how to ride safely.
What does the course cover?+
The course includes 4 modules — Before You Ride, Rules of the Road, Hazard Awareness, and Riding Responsibly — covering California ebike laws and classifications, road signs and traffic signals, hazard identification and avoidance, right-of-way rules, and emergency procedures and safety equipment.
How long does the course take?+
Most riders complete the course in 2 to 3 hours. The course is entirely self-paced, so you can take breaks and return where you left off.
What score do I need to pass the exam?+
You need 80% to pass -- that means at least 32 out of 40 questions answered correctly.
How many times can I retake the exam?+
You can attempt the exam up to 5 times. After a failed attempt, there is a 24-hour cooldown period before you can try again. This gives you time to review the material before your next attempt.
How do officers verify my certification?+
Each certificate includes a unique QR code. Officers can scan the QR code with any smartphone camera to instantly verify your certification status. No app or login is required for verification.
Is my child's data safe?+
Yes. We are fully COPPA compliant. We do not serve ads, do not use tracking pixels, and never sell or share personal data with third parties. Users under 13 require verified parental consent before they can create an account.
Can I delete my account?+
Yes. Send a request to support@ebikecertification.com and we will delete your account and all associated data within 5 business days.
What is the QR helmet sticker?+
After you pass the exam, you can pick up a free QR helmet sticker from any of our partner bike shops. The sticker contains your unique QR code so that your certification status can be verified quickly during a stop -- without needing to pull out your phone or a paper certificate.
